Commentary |
The S&P 500 was up by 0.01% in May, making its YTD return to -13,30% in 2022, its worst start to the year since World War II. This is mainly due to the rising interest rates and high inflation that raised concerns about consumer sentiment. Nonetheless, near the end of May, it has been registered a 6.58% one-week rebound, its best week since November 2020. The S&P 500 registered seven consecutive weeks of red, a cumulative drop of 14.18%, an event that since 1928 has only occurred in other 3 cases, with the last one in March 2001. The Dow Jones gained 0.04% in May, but it is down 9.21% YTD. The Nasdaq performance was -1.5% during the month. The best performing sector for the month was Energy with a positive 15.8% while the worst performing one was REITs with a decline of -5.2%. From April the CPI remained unchanged (0.3% M/M vs. consensus 0.2% and up 8.3% Y/Y), although food (0.9 % M/M and now up 9.4 % vs. Y/Y) and shelter (0.5 % M/M and 5.1 % Y/Y) increased, while energy fell. Core CPI increased 0.6 % M/M and 6.2 % Y/Y due to lower food and energy prices. The general consensus is that inflation is nearing its peak, but the drop in April’s data was not as significant as many had hoped, prompting concerns that inflation may linger at higher levels for longer than many, including the Fed, would prefer. |
