Commentary |
The S&P 500 was down 8,97% in the month of June, mounting to a YTD return of -20,58%, its worst first half of the year in 52 years. The discouraging results are to be attributed to heightened inflation and fears of an imminent recession, which took their toll on risky assets. Even though equity markets seem doomed, J.P. Morgan Global Head of Equity told CNBC that the world’s largest bank is forecasting an imminent reversal, to close the year at 4,900 points. All the major equity indices had a negative performance in the month of June, except for the Shanghai Comp., reflecting the current instability of equity markets. The energy sector remains very strong due to the rise in oil and gas prices – Occidental Petroleum is the best performing stock of the year so far – as well as the healthcare and part of the consumer goods sector. Tech stocks are bearing the lion’s share of losses from the Fed’s interest rate rises to fight inflation. Netflix, the worst performing stock so far in 2022, has seen its share price plunge more than 70%. The CPI for the month of June is expected to show inflation rise above the 8.6% YoY pace registered in May, while many think that core CPI (excluding food and energy) could be lower. The rise in energy prices is leading the rise in inflation, which is expected to peak in 2022 and revert to more normal levels during 2023, depending on the state of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the ability of the FED to fight rising prices, and intensity of supply chain problems. |
